Afghanistan - Pakistan
The AfPak group focuses on the relationships of Afghanistan, and Pakistan, through a U.S. centric lens, as they pertain to the infrastructure development of the region. In 2009, President Obama first introduced ‘AfPak’ as a way of emphasizing the U.S. regional approach to the conflict in Afghanistan and recognizing Pakistan’s key role in countering the al-Qaeda threat. Despite calls by policymakers over the years to alter the language and approach, remnants of the old and largely unsuccessful framework have remained in place. The AfPak group's main research efforts in 2015-2016 are with the prospects for foreign investment and development into infrastructure, within the Afghanistan-Pakistan region.
